F connector problem

I must be missing something..

I'm trying to fit some Tyco F Series connectors to RG6 cable. The tyco part number is 5-1814826-3 which is correct for RG6/U. The data sheet says the crimping tool must crimp down to 8.6mm across the flats. My tool crimps to

8.2mm so it should be an over tight tight crimp but the result is hopeless - way too loose - the connector can be pulled off easily. The cutting diagram for the cable braid is clear enough but the dimensions imply the braid shouldn't be folded back over the sheath as with other F series I've used.

The Tyco connector is designed for RG6/U - I assume that's the same diameter as RG6?

Just tried adding a sleeve of heat shrink under the crimp and it's still too loose. The crimp ring is just way too big. Will send them back.

I don't know what you mean folded back ?, I've never exposed the braid and folded it back? Normally you just cut back (including) the braid to expose the correct length of the center conductor with it's insulation. Then you slide on the connector which you need to force the center tube under the braid which is also under the insulated jacket.

And the final task is, crimp!

to expose the correct

That's the way I've done it in the past but in this case the dimensions they give for trimming the braid/jacket means the center insulator bottoms out inside the connector by a long long way. The back end of the center tube is also very blunt and somewhat larger than normal. Even if the center didn't bottom out its impossible to get it to go under the braid/jacket. I've tried.

The drawing also shows the jacket removed from part of the braid implying it's to be folded back like a screw on F connector. That doesn't work either because the central insulator is then way too long (by about 7mm).

Got me stumped.

Check that the instructions and connector match, best place to go is probably to the supplier.

That's where I'm heading.
