Tektronix 2465 problem

Greetings all, I have a Tektronix 2465 that has developed a strange problem. During operation the trace and all screen readouts slowly creep to the left of the display. Then they will start to jitter and then disappear, pressing the beam find button sometimes brings the thing back to normal operation.

Cranking up the intensity shows that the thing is still working but the beam appears to be getting pulled to the far left and all I get on the screen is a wash of electrons being scattered off the inside wall of the CRT, you can tell the beam is still sweeping and the readouts are still being written, there are no error codes indicated on the control panel. Has anyone had this problem before? I do not own a service manual and would like to get some tips on what the problem might be. Thanks in advance....

I'd say your horizontal output IC is beginning to fail;a very common problem in the 2445/64 series.Unfortunately,it's a TEK-made IC,no longer made or stocked by TEK.The only place you can get a replacement is from another 2445/65 scope.

Some people have tried putting a heatsink on the IC,I don't know if that would work for you.

Thanks for the tip, I figured it may be something like this. Would you know witch IC this is? I do have a second unit for my bench but would like to get the other one working again since I was using it as a monitor for my amateur station. If not I'll probably just pick up another working unit off ebay..

Thanks for the help

I don't recall the exact part number,IIRC U800 is the board designation,it's a large wide DIP,with a metal exposed substrate and two threaded studs at each end,on the motherboard.

Exactly as Jim said: It's the U800. The Tek number is printed on the IC (starting with a 15...) the U800 is marked on print.

check around in the web, a few Ic are being sold be several 2nd hand sellers. But be awre: Supply is limeted (IC is out of production since long time). So price is high.

Another way is to by a second 2445/2465 A/B (any combo will havethe IC you need) as a junker scope. But make shure the U800 of the junker is alright BEFORE you buy!

Do a google search for "tektronix 2465" This problem is mentioned very often during the last ten years.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll look for the specific IC but I'll probably just have to buy a "parts" 2465 off the web. I have always been a Tektronix scope fan despite some of the problems certain models develop after years of service.

I would seriously consider looking for a working Tek scope of a different model. If you actually find a "parts" 2465 with a known good U800 then it is likely to be expensive, and could still die on you at any time.

I suspect that Jim Y. could recommend some good alternatives that don't have this flaw.
