Differences between digital oscilloscopes and acquisition board

Which are the main differences between the stand alone digital oscilloscopes and the acquisition PC boards with A/D inputs? In particular are there particular limitation with the PC boards in terms of input voltages? For example I've seen the Acquisition Logic PC products. The maximum input voltage is about 5 Vpp. Is there a particular reason for this kind of products?
