For a particular definition of "good," sure it is. You might also want to look at the Arduino family of boards. They use a C-like language instead of BASIC and, as a result of a very wide user base, the Arduino board have quite a lot of expansion modules.

We haven't tried them. You should also consider Coridium who make similar boards using ARM microcontrollers:
