"Best" PIC learner's book?

Could I have a few opinions on what is the most comprehensive, practical book on learning to use PIC's, particularly for applications related to signal generation.

I am technician, but have no prior programming experience.

microchip control handbook ( if its still in print), or print out the application notes from their site. No credit card required.
