Can surface mount film capacitors be used as bypass capacitors in place of ceramic capacitors. Is there some rule that bypass capacitors have to be ceramic ?
I want to use all surface mount components on my board.

Yes.
No. But I am curious as to why you believe a film capacitor should be used instead of ceramic.
Easily doable these days.

I want to use some bypass capacitors. I am not able to find any ceramic bypass capacitors at digikey. Some datasheets specifically say use "ceramic 0.1uf".
Do you think it is fine to use thick film SMT 0.1 uF in this case.
Digikey sells plenty of ceramic surface mount caps. In their index they are called "Ceramic, Chip" and "Ceramic, Multilayer Chip".
Yes. But you will get better volume efficiency and cost from a ceramic SMT. There is a reason they are so popular for that application.

That answers my question. Thanks Larry
