Having observed their behaviour quite a bit, I have to say that they are quite an amazing little critter...smart, excellent work ethic...people could learn from them. :-)

Forget the cruel toy. This tip, from rec.pets.birds, may help. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's one of them more popular cooked cereal mixes. The spiciness is fine for birds, their sense of taste is no where near as good as ours, and the hotness of some spices doesn't trigger their pain receptors the way it does mammals. One way to keep squirrels out of a bird feeder, for example, is to mix the seed with Chile pepper. The wild birds don't care about the Chile, but the squirrels usually don't like it (at least until one develops a taste for it!)
