Converting A Cassette Recorder?

Can a cassette recorder be converted for variable speed playback?

Place a variable resistor between the motor and yes you can slow down the speed but not speed it up. If you want to speed it up you will need some power source to increase the voltage to the motor, which can be done.

all of them can, but depending on type of motor :

- if the motor has a built-in regulator, then find the adjustment for it (usually a small pot behind a small hole)

- if the motor has an external regulator, find the feedback loop and modify it accordingly

in all cases the motor has a voltage applied which is lower as the supply voltage, so speeding up also works

never just put a variable resistor in series, it will reduce torque and increase the so called "wow" due to unregulated speed

I suspect all cassette recorders, even the very cheapest, have feedback circuits to regulate the speed. Simply adjusting the voltage to the motor won't do it. This is not a simple project, because you probably won't be able to get a diagram of the speed control circuit.
