But they could have just as well said, capacitance, capacitance, capacitance. It takes two to tango. We've all seen that many breakthroughs have come on devices with reduced capacitance and/ or increased transconductance, in old fixed-inductance packages.
As for Jim Thompson, surely he refers to transistor embodiments within ICs, where capacitance issues rule over inductance. The rest of us have to live in the real world with interconnections.
