But they could have just as well said, capacitance, capacitance, capacitance. It takes two to tango. We've all seen that many breakthroughs have come on devices with reduced capacitance and/ or increased transconductance, in old fixed-inductance packages.
As for Jim Thompson, surely he refers to transistor embodiments within ICs, where capacitance issues rule over inductance. The rest of us have to live in the real world with interconnections.

Well, in my business it's capacitance, capacitance, capacitance. Though in the past few years it's been turning to leakage, leakage, leakage. Inductance is for the power/packaging weenies. ;-)

How much does that socket cost?
I don't remember exactly. The company I'm doing the design for wanted to socket some of the chips, and the chips, while expensive at $70 a piece are cheaper than the sockets, so we decided to design a daughter board with less expensive connectors.
