China doesn't make the most advanced chips. I suspect that the US doesn't either.

It's quite tricky to work out what's going on the surface of an advanced chip.

Between 1982 and 1991 I knew quite a bit about electron beam testers - stroboscopic electron microscopes

Back then they worked tolerably well, but as chips got more complex, they need multiple layers of metalisation above the doped silicon surface where the signals get processed, and the primary electron beam can't get through that, and the secondary electrons that tell you about the voltage changes at the places you are looking at when you hit them with the electron beam can't get out again to get analysed and detected.

You can pick up more information than you can with a mechanical probe, and the electron beam can be focussed into a very small spot and moved around quite fast, but you haven't got anything like compete access.

They may still be used, but it would be mainly to look at deliberately inserted test points that are oxide insulated and can stick up through the metalisation layers.
