Why I never throw away old computers

nothing but spam, scam, ad's all over the screen...

try again, I don't look at trojan sites and one of the things that keeps this PC clean is the fact that it's old and most of the Adware, Toolbars ect won't install/work on it.

I tossed out a Heathkit LSI-11 once. I regret it now. It was one of those times when friends helped me deal with my pack-rat tendencies. lol I don't miss the Lear Sigler terminal and I have kept the 8008 computer. Some day I need to haul it out and see if it still works. Doubt it will ever be valuable as it likely has very little interest by collectors. I learned a lot working on it. It was built from a kit by a grad student at my uni and whey they couldn't get it to work I got it. I had it working in a few hours. lol I have to say though that was the Chemistry department, not EE. The problem was actually design flaws. I doubt any of these kits worked without a mod.

I also have a Technico 9900 SBC. That was even more fun.

You need to learn how to install proper protection. There is not a single ad on that page on may computer. Adblock stopped four ads. Ghostery stopped 19 trackers.

And FWIW, the Mercury News page is not spam or a scam or a trojan site.

I seem to recall having an H19 as well. It was pretty cool (at the time) in that you could burn new EPROMs for it and improve the functionality.

I had a job in college at the computing center and they decided to buy a bunch of the ADM3A terminals, but to save money they bought the kits. Someone decided that all the chips, and there must have been 200 chips on that board, should be socketed. That gave all sorts of reliability issues. Also the keyboards were not debounced and required cleaning with contact cleaner. Lower case character ROMs were an extra-cost option.

Since I was constantly taking terminals in and out of the computer room down to the lab to work on them I put a sign on the cart "Terminal Ambulance Mobile Unit 1."

It was the best college job because I always had a terminal to use for my programming and never had to wait in line or use punch cards again.

They marketed the ADM3A as "The Dumb Terminal." They even sent me 5 tee-shirts with a picture of the terminal, and "The Dumb Terminal" printed on it.

You stated Adblock stopped 4 ads and Ghostery stopped 19 trackers, what do you think constitutes a trojan site? I don't want trackers, toolbars reg scanners, virus scanners or anything being installed on my PC just because I visited a website or won't allow me to see the content I and interesting in until I agree to their idea of running my PC.

When these places make it hard for you to navigate around the clutter that is jumping up all over the screen, thereby making a high probability the viewer will select something they didn't want, there goes the unwarranted action that was trying to be avoided.

The last time I checked "Trojan" was a word used to indicate receiving something you didn't ask for or didn't expect among other things. When sites play little graphical games to lure you in on selecting something you didn't want, that is trojan activity as far as I am concerned. Many of them go so far as to falsify the labeling and you end up doing what they want. I should not have to run adblockers, tracker stoppers to avoid their idea of getting into my pockets.

At one time there was no need for this software to be installed, it's jerks like you that has caused issues like this, those that create problems and then offer solutions for their own self benefit.

Just look at some of the malware tools offered, one I can think of will report randomly that you have crap loads of malware until you buy their tool, then it magically tells you that your machine is rather clean from day to day, isn't that so quaint? I get the impression that you're the type that would go in blind and buy into that.

I remember trying to use the H19 with a 9.6K modem. Would not work reliably above 2.4K. I have the EPROM listing for the H19. I think it was a extra cost item at the time. The H19 and H89 were fun projects to put together.

BTW: If anyone happens to come across a Xerox 530 mini (SDS Sigma 3 follow-on) or a Xerox 560 (SDS Sigma 9 follow on) I'd really like to know. I know Zenith and NASA had some 560s. 530s where used on the Alaska pipe line.

I had good performance from an H19 terminal on hardwired serial ports, at 9600 baud. It was doing character-set graphics (four pixels per character), with vectored screen addressing, and never messed up a data plot. Your problem might have been the modem, or it might have been flow control settings.

Nice machine, but I got one of the first Macintosh models and that was when the H19 became a dusty relic.
