waterproof microphone

Hi!

I'm designing a portable device containing a microphone. As this device is to be used outdoors (field work), it should be waterproof (at least rain proof). What possibilities exist to mount the microphone protected from water? I already considered special waterproof microphones (e.g. KNOWLES ACOUSTICS MR and WP series) or using a waterproof speaker as a microphone (sound quality doesn't matter as the instrument merely registers the peak volume), but maybe there is a simpler (and cheaper and smaller) solution... Ok, putting the whole thing in a plastic bag may be simple and cheap, but I'm looking for something which is more "professional" ;-)

Thanks!

Hm, ok, putting a condom over it may work, but is roughly the same category as the plastic bag - it's not really appropriate for a device which will be produced in (small) series. I would also doubt the durability of the condom (UV radiation...).

What a coincidence, my lab is developing microphone-proof water as we speak.

If you just want to know that there is a signal, try a hydrophone.

How about the standard electret mic in an aluminum capsule . . . take a sheet of some flat light plastic like polyethylene or mylar film and super glue it to the front then cut away the excess around the face. On the connection terminal side solder wires on, paint with a high quality oil based varnish, then shrink fit sleeves over the connections.

With a little care it would hardly be any different than the standard electret capsule. Buy an electret already mounted in a holder and water proof each one.

** What you are asking for may be impossible.

All depends on what sort of SPLs are actually trying to measure.

Cos a mic exposed to rain and wind is gonna make a lot of noise you do not want.

Make a laser mic, its not hard and it doesn't matter if the beam gets wet.

In surgical theatres things from microscopes to joy sticks to microphones are routinely covered with plastic bag covers - maybe see what they use and buy them.
