In a distributed audio system in a residence, how can volume control in each room be accomplished. I realize that it's more complex than just putting a potentiometer in the speaker leads. Is this accomplished via 70v distribution system (ie, high-impedance amplifier output)? Or is some kind of acceptable variable attenuation possible in each room?Google turns up L-pads. If I understand, an L-pad keeps 8-ohm impedance on the line from the amplifier, while providing an attenuated signal to the speaker. As long as it is properly chosen, are there any cautions I should know about installing an L-pad for each pair of speakers in a room? Are L-pads reliable (no noise, etc.)? Brands to recommend? Strictly speaking, L- Pads are fixed attentuators that match differentimpedances.What you want is a variable attenuator pad that will keep theimpedance (as seen by your amp) constant (commonly 8 ohms but it canvary) as you vary the volume. Ah, so I guess the product you were talking about the other week was the Olive, and it's you who's been spamming these newsgroups about it.

OK. Well, we already know you were wrong about the Netgear, because the network traffic measurements clearly showed the server software was not compressing .wav files before transmitting them over the wireless network.

Still, the Netgear does not have digital out. I guess the acid test would be the $900 Olive versus the $300 Squeezebox, both using their digital outputs to connect to a hi-fi DAc and audio system; and then we'd see if any listeners could detect a quality difference in .wav files transmitted over a wireless network to the $300 Squeezbox compared with the $900 Olive.

You're mistaken about the context.

I've only ever mentioned *standalone* wireless audio links in this thread since the OP wanted a *simple* solution.

Other ppl - like you introduced entire whole server based solutions. I know these can transfer audio at native bit rate but a PC in every room just to distribute audio is overkill, impractical, non user-friendly, nopisy and just plain DUMB !

I guess you missed the Nordic Semi product I mentioned ? It's standalone.

I use FLAC with my SB2's so the music is stored in LOSSLESS compression, then transferred to a SB2 and uncompressed to original CD. Hifi, indeed.

Also, to distribute the music I have a KuroBox HG with a 400GB Seagate hardrive synch'd to another identical one. Each only uses 17W of power and is extremely quite. But if you have no linux experience at all, steer clear.

Squeezebox 2; yes, it's wireless. You place one in each room where you want to hear sound; and you have a single computer in your home storing all the music. The music is stored uncompressed or compressed, and transmitted over the Ethernet wired or wireless network the way it is stored. The Squeezebox 2 can provide analog or digital output.

The Squeezebox 2 costs about $300 for each room, which makes it the most expensive of the available solutions for computer-server based wireless distribution of uncompressed digital audio files. Still, the non-computer based solutions seem to cost $1000 for each room each right now.

Of course with the computer-based solutions you can have the Squeezebox 2 in some rooms, and lower-cost devices such as the $100 Netgear MP101 in others.

I don't know... I can tell you the Netgear MP101 doesn't support WPA. The Netgear MP101 does support WEP-128, but Netgear's own web site says this is not much harder to crack than WEP-40/WEP-64. See
