Our EMC problem was that they couldn't get consistent test results. Push the comb (first time I saw the 100th harmonic :( ) down over here and something would pop up over there. No two passes were within 10dB of each other. Fast Transient through us for a loop, though. That one was stupid (paint).

EMC wasn't the big cost though. The compliance reports were a mess. They had graphs that didn't match the text, wrong photographs, wrong components, and other errors galore. We just found out that it was going to cost another $1K for them to fix their CB report. Overall it was well north of that $60K number being thrown around above.

Our stuff evidently (before my time) with flying colors when they did pre-compliance scans a year before. Then they required FCC Class-A compliance, even though it's commercial equipment. It was a real cluster...

You're paid by the hour. No way I would do my own taxes either. Since I'm salaried, I do. The last couple of years were a mess because of the moves and different employers but they're generally simple enough that SWMBO does them.

[NRE costs]

EMC work can be like molasses. You squeeze there and it oozes out over on the other side.

A provider screwed up and now they want you to pay for their screw-up? I'd slam that report onto their CEO's table and tell him that he should take care of it or this would be the last job for them.

Probably meant class B. Yes, that has thrown people a curve. Many businesses and certainly hospitals are now requiring class B for everything.

Once I retire I might do them myself.

Completely different sources and solutions. We were trying to squash

200-230MHz (100th+ of the 2MHz I2S clock) and the next pass 30MHz would show up from the Ethernet with no changes to it. They had no handle on their measurements.

That water is long over the dam. They had lower rates but you get what you pay for.

Right, though this was an issue of interpretation of the regs. We have a transmitter (2.4GHz FHSS) inside the box, which has been independently certified. Their interpretation was that our product was an intentional radiator, so had to pass those requirements (same as class-B). Our customer doesn't care, just that it's certified for sale everywhere.

It's pretty easy for most individuals. The hard work has to be done if someone else prepares them anyway. THe prices the tax preparers charge for typing the information into a computer is ridiculous. There is no value add.
