Variac problem

I would be looking for a motor brush about the right size and with an attached lead (if yours has that). You can sand a slightly over sized one down to fit the holder and be back in business for a few dollars and dirty hands. Around here, the hardware store and the Farm Bureau store sell them. Or you might find a suitable one in an old electric drill or other universal motor (though ones with leads attached are hard to find).

I have a GE Volt-Pac #9T92A1 2.5A variac, and the brush has died (broken up) on me. Online search shows a source that costs about $45, and a low brand-new price variac replacement is $75+shipping (digiKey wants about $200!). That $45 price is totally outrageous for a dinky brush that one could lose if dropped.

Any decent-priced sources?

I have several cases of Superior #21 powerstats I bought a while ago. I can sell you as many as you want for $35 each (which is what I paid) plus shipping. I can probably fit several in a USPS $10 flat rate box. Of course these are bigger (5 A) than what you have.

There used to be small companies (like a one-man band) in some places that could make custom brushes from several stock sizes, they just grind them to suit on a sander, or DIY, it is a dirty job though.

My 8Amp Variac lost it's brush (god knows how). Simply couldn't be arsed going through the process of finding/buying the correct part, so for peanuts picked something near from a box containing thousands of 'em, at a local vintage auto jumble. Bit of filing and it went straight in.

go to a sewing machine store or a hardware store which use to at one time have small brushess on hand for power tools and little motors. You can get one to fit I'm sure.

Worth a look... Brush shape looks something like this..

+----^----+ | | +--+ +--+ +---+

.. where the ^ is a bit larger to this "scale".

At present, i am bidding on e-bay; will just recycle the one i have... ...seems the easiest way to go.

This one has no leads. Have "run around" various hardware stores and gave up.
