unlock car door over cell phone

Jul 27, 2005 31 Replies

My friend sent his wife out to her Dodge Durango and had her point her cell phone at the door while he put the door opener near his other cell phone. He said he can lock & unlock the door over the pair of cell phones.

So what is going on here?

thanks, Bob

Sounds like BS to me. Car door openers are RF, not acoustic.

Did he try the experiment without the cell phones? Perhaps he was just plain ol' in range and either didn't realize it or was giving you some old-fashioned razz-mataz?

His "friend" SENDS RF THROUGH a cell phone? I think not.

Oh, but Jim, you're not looking at it through the eyes of your average consumer. Cell phones are magic, remote door openers are magic, why shouldn't they work together? After all, computers and printers are magic and _they_ usually work together!

Well I guess we DO need burger flippers, lawn boys, garbage collectors and store clerks ;-)

I was just as leary of bullshit and pretty much told him the same thing last night - that he was full of s*it. He reported back to me this morning that he performed the experiment and it worked. I asked him if it worked when he hanged up the phone and he said nope.

So you guys really have to think about it some more and maybe perform the experiment yourself and report back to group. I think I will try tonight. I'm not sure if you need two cell phones or not.

I have a 2001 Dodge Stratus with likely the same door remote system. The manual says it will work up to 20 feet away but it works often beyond 50 feet. It may have simply been working in spite of being near the cell phone.

Always make NEW mistakes.

And cell phones aren\'t RF?

You actually don't need any cell phones. And what's even more amazing, if you *do* use a cell phone, it works just as well when it is turned off - you can even remove the battery! Just hold the cell phone near the door, push the button on the opener and voila!

Pagers work too.

Sno-o-o-o-o-ort! ROTFLMAO!

They don't 'rebroadcast', which is what is implied by putting the source controller near to one, and having the other near to the car.

Hello Tim,

Really? The one in my office will often only comply after a some stern banging onto the right panel.

hell no.!! they use a Dylithium power generator that energizes a subspace field around the user thus allowing them to create a worm hole in another dimension that connects them together as if they were holding hands clear acrossed the milky way! :)

come on guys,, you have never seen some one take a cell phone and have a custom answering playing tune that can be decoded via audio when the phone inside the car rings? it's just a little gadget you can get for cars that respond to a recorded tone sequence that you can up load in the phone that is in the car just for that number that is calling in. they also have multiple security configurations to have more than one phone dial in . most phones these days can be programmed to play what ever you up load into when per number!

How far away from the car were you at the time?

Hello Bob,

Usually you have to say "whoop-di-dou" three times, then it works ;-)

Only with the additional requirement that there can't be a black cat crossing from left to right while you say the magic phrase.
