I'm running the 30-day trial of newsreader Agent 8.
It keeps warning me that the trial is almost up. I keep trying to buy it and their order page keeps crashing. I leave voicemails and nobody responds.

Look on group alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent Thread: Agent abandonware? 12/9/2023 There is a registration given there! Good luck C+
This is the place to go, the only place that works.

Thanks.
My 30-day trial of Agent 8 is theoretically expired today.
What a hassle!
I'd be happy to run my old v3.1, which I have the reg codes for, but it doesn't seem to work in Windows11.
Try a different browser. Some have had luck calling. Cherrs
One weird thing about Agent8 is that if I view a post that has an embedded web link, my browser opens that link immediately, even if I don't click on it.
I'd ask for support, but there isn't any.
Bad! Never open a link unless you really want to do so. Get rid of Agent! I've heard that sometimes just opening a Web site can infect your computer.
Good luck!

Thunderbird email and newsgroup reader does work very well with Eternal-September (E-S) or paid usenet hosts.
Currently the admin of E-S is blocking a wave of spam from Google Groups
- which is really appreciated!

I'll try that. Thanks.
I was looking in the gigantic tools/options for a switch.
I just got an email from Ana at Forte. She apologized for the hassle and comp'd me an auth code. I'd still be happy to pay for it.
So Agent is still sort of alive.
The 30-day trial has expired but it keeps working, so I'll use the auth code if it stops.
I wish they would add some better/more message filtering features so I might be able to squash some of this sporge in the group.
For instance, any thread started by a scammer/spammer should be able to be deleted if it has responders from our normal group so I don't have to see useless (to me) responses show up.
I'm not sure how much Agent is being worked on.

I *do* wish people would refrain from reacting to these spammers. If they'd only ignore them, the S/N of this group would improve vastly.

What could work is to look for diagrams and trigrams that are common in whatever that language is but are rare elsewhere, and have a regex rule that counts such n-grams - block if too many are found.
Basically, not at all. The only real support is the Usenet group mentioned earlier. There are threads on developing just such regex rules there.

The "Ignore thread" does almost that. It marks the messages as read, but does not delete the headers. When you press space to read the next message, you will skip those messages, but since the headers are still available, you still have the option to manually retrieve them should you want to.
The name may be a bit misleading. Only that message and its follow-ups get affected by the filter.
