Of course there is - but it takes some knowledge in electronics . . .

ditch the 9 volt battery if you can and use something like D batteries for 6 volts then build a DC/DC converter.

By putting all the load on a single 9 V battery it will die in less than 1/3 the time of the original - and 9V batteries aren't the most cost effective source of power.

Hi y'all, I have a homemade electrolysis device that operates with 27volts dc that is, 3 x 9v batteries. Is there a way to design a simple circuit in order to use just one 9v battery and still get the 27v output? Sorry my knowledge in electronics is zero to none. Any help is appreciated

Finally "Phil Allison" comes clean on his capabilities...

Nah, the headers @ -0700 don't fit his side of Asutralia (+0800) and he's not half clever enough to forge headers.

To the O/P: yes, easy, but the downside is that your single 9V battery will last roughly 1/4 as long as the three-in-series combination.

Search for the data sheet for the MC34063. There is a 12V_in_to_28V_out converter schematic in there which works straight off the plan, and will still deliver 28V out at 4V in so you can really wring the neck of your 9V units.

Quite a lot of voltage for electrolysis, isn't it ? Normally the required voltages are around 1-2V

Not a "simple circuit."

You can buy low-power dc/dc converter bricks, up to 3 watts maybe, from the Mouser or Digikey catalogs.

Any reason this has to be portable? If you have an old wall transformer with DC output, try it. My guess is that a 12 V unit will work. Else, you can buy one with higher output. I would not buy anything that runs off a 9 V battery, unless the use is for a few seconds a day.
