Topological material switched off and on for the first time

A new study represents a significant advance in topological transistors and beyond-CMOS electronics. First time that the topological state in a topological insulator has been switched on and off using an electric field at room temperature.

Early days... early days.

True that, but... it's a whole new mode, a new mechanism to explore, like when semiconductor diode junctions and the transistor were first discovered. Effectively superconducting switches along the edge of a monatomic layer. Exciting.

One thing that caught my notice was they talked as if the current could only go in one direction like in a diode "with near-zero dissipation of energy". If true, that alone might be useful even without the ability to switch.
