Those stupid delay dome lights in vehicles

Jun 29, 2018 91 Replies

A picture is worth 1000 metaphors and analogies: It is traditionally located just south of where you would smash your head if you rolled the vehicle. My hatchback has a second dome light at the rear of the car, conveniently located where I do smash my head on it after rummaging around for junk in the back of the vehicle.

Please note that the dome light is normally installed inside the vehicle, not outside:

Usually in the middle of the dash there is a set of controls. On the left is the blower, on the top selects where it blows to, ad on the bottom it mixes the hot air with the cold, fresh air.

Wear pants. You have to get out of that car sometime.

My dome light consists of SEVEN bulbs. 2 above dashboard, one in middle of van. one in back of van, two on rear tailgate door, one under dash. Seven filament bulbs will drain any battery overnight.

I find all the junk in today's cars tiresome. I've no use for it. It breaks down. It makes usability a mare. And they expect me to pay for it all - I want to pay for a car not a pile of gimmicks as well. We've seen improvemen ts in mpg, cornering, crash safety & braking since the 60s, the rest has if anything gone backwards. And all that acceleration power? What for? I've n ever seen the sense in it.

It hasn't really gotten any better than in 1970. They finally had the suspe nsion ironed out. The THM 400 was the best automatic transmission ever buil t, its valve body was like a analog, hydraulic computer. I s*it you not, lo ok up the drawings and theory of operation. There have been some improvemen ts in the engine, not the least of which is the EFI of whatever type. I kne w how to set up a carb and I got advice number one - DO NOT RTFM. My cars s tarted with two pumps and were drivable in about 15 seconds, and with the c am driven oil pump instead of the crank driven you shouldn't even drive tha t soon when it's cold.

There is sense to it. Even back then there were assholes who would speed up when you went to pass them. When I pass I use it all, to the floor. They h ave no choice nor even time to react. And when assholes won't let you over on the highway, you just pass them all. What I don't see is these top speed s. My spedometer went to 135, and there is no doubt it did it. I still had a passing gear at 105. when that kicked in I was not looking at the dash. I did that ONCE. There was a place you could do it here, a part of the highw ay that wasn't open yet. It was my little secret. All I had to do was to mo ve the barricades a bit and I knew how to hit it at an angle, and not get o ut every time. Anyone else looks at it they think you can't get past it. Bu llshit. After that opened there was only one place I knew of, a LONG highwa y off ramp, maybe like 2 miles. Nobody on it. Thank you poor planners. Go b ack to the 1960s and Quigey (ave. in the flats) was the race place, but the cops found a mountain of (fine) money down there and that took care of tha t. Now I would only feel safe doing that s*it out on the Salt Flats. I am n ot driving to Utah to waste gas.

Wanna hear sad ? Guy comes to buy tools off me off Craigslist. Builds racec ars. His son got hit in the noggin real hard when young and had retinal det achment, eventually they figured out something is wrong. They reattached th e retina but he cannot ever ride in a racecar because the G force might cau se him to go blind. At least that's what they say. Not that there are no bu cket seats and pimp rests, he can't drive them. I didn't say it, the doctor s did. The only way it makes any sense is if the detachment was toward the front of the eye. Your retina does go almost all the way to the lens, and i f it tears off there the G force can be like ripping up a carpet.

But I do see the need for acceleration in traffic. Just not the top speed. And if you think a 1970 Toronado W34 is fast on acceleration, there is my c ousin's 1964 442. After some "slight" modifications (Edelbrock, 3 Holleys, cam, modified rear suspension, just minor you see but it was then a 642) it ripped the front seat bolts out of the floor. My cousin was kinda like me in the fact that we did most of our most dastardly deeds alone. So imagine you are flat on your back in the back with your legs sticking up in the air and the car is rolling down the street who knows where.

Anyway, my Toronado had 7 courtesy lights but I had 2 batteries in it. That helped with the amplifier I build for it, pulled 30 amps when you crank it up. We used to go down in the park and got tired of walking before we coul d no longer hear it. And it was not playing BOOM MUFUKA BOOM MUFUKA BOOM MU FUKA. That car's ignition was worn out just right so you could put it in ac c and just barely pull the key out. So it could run the radio but nobody co uld start it, trying to would just shut it off and then it was locked.

I probably could have had alot more ass if I let girls drive it. But you ca n't let that thing into just anyones hands. I beat Vettes in it, except for the rare big block ones. It could rip the tar right off the street, I s*it you not.

And the lights went out as soon as I closed the door :-) I want another one .

Sounds like the sort of car that could be easily beat by a Tesla.

Almost ANY car that runs on gas would. But they didn't have them when I was 15.

Yeah yeah yeah I know it is illegal to drive that young but we didn't care. In fact me and my buddy gave his 10 year old son a chainsaw. We bring them up right and early, and they can all read by the time they hit kindergarte n. Some have actually shot a gun, but that is extreme supervision for that. I was about 7 or 8 when I watched my Uncles teach my Aunt how to shoot. I don't remember why, I think maybe they got her a gun for Christmas.

current car gets about 70mpg combined. 70s stuff didn't manage even half th at. It should do 200k miles, 70s stuff didn't manage half that. Far better reliability. BUT modern cars are loaded with crap that mostly interferes wi th their use.

Last one I borrowed was so stuffed with sound deadening stuff that I could never tell what speed the engine was doing. And the rev meter was pretty ho peless. That's not a sensible combination.

Current one has a radio that's a total pain to use.

so no need for it. The roads are clogged in England, I've driven a high per formance car and sat in the same traffic jams as everyone else. It makes li ttle difference. I'm not so impatient that I think I need to save seconds. If I want to drive crazy I'll go back to the racetrack, the road is no plac e for that.

I am having trouble figuring if you are agreeing or disagreeing here.

You are getting a little taste of listening to your rants. Often they just wander all over without saying anything of consequence.

Rick C.

That should be "doesn't *want* to RTFM".

There were some great cars & some serious junk. The junk finished off most of the British car industry.

NT

They were _all_ rust buckets and built like crap.

I have my lights permanently off. I know my car in the dark, but burgers don't. Since i live in car breakin capital of the world (SF:10,000/year), can't afford to have lights at night.

Your experience is evidently limited.
