My girlfriend has (well, had giving current situation a lot went home) a number of Asian students in her classes, some from wealthy mainland China business-families and very important members of the Party or whatever oh my fancy fancy.

There's no hard-and-fast rule on how students from mainline China perform, some are excellent, some have no idea what they're doing, and most somewhere in between. The clumsy bribes tend to come from just the worst students there are, ones that have trouble not plagiarizing constantly or even showing up to class with any regularity.

If you'd merely said that people have been moving from San Francisco to rural areas to get more house (or land) for their money, that would have made perfect sense - it's a pattern known across the industrial world. Statistics suggesting that this effect is overwhelming migration into the city are more interesting, and need more justification - though again, it does not sound at all unbelievable, especially with Covid.
