Stop Light Design

I read in sci.electronics.design that xray wrote (in ) about 'Stop Light Design', on Tue, 29 Mar 2005:

Personally I feel you ought to drive really carefully around them all, but then again I am in a city where you'd swear that traffic lights (and the traffic laws generally) are fairly optional.

Dick Smith (yeah, I know, it's really based in Oz and only came to NZ later) seems to be rapidly heading down the same path as Radio Shack here in the US, although isn't quite as far along the path yet.

With the price of labor and real estate today, it's almost impossible to have a retail 'electronics parts' store and make any money (certainly not in, e.g., mall locations!), so any such store has to sell 'consumer electronics' along with the parts. I'm happier with Radio Shack around than without them, since they do still sell a lot of items that are otherwise impossible to obtain at 3PM on a Sunday afternoon.

I wonder if Radio Shack still employs any engineers? About a decade back I remember the occaisonal poster here would be an RS employee and they were the guys working on some of the fancier multimeters, radios, etc.

Obviously they don't hang red lights outside places-of-ill-repute out your way. Not that I'd know if the do here, obviously. Never mind, I'll workshop that one, it'll be better next time. :-)

It must have been a terribly expensive radio.

Their commission pays more than RS wages. Or at least it did for the effective salesmen the time I worked there. My commission was squat, but luckily I had met and become buddies with a guy from the repair shop, so I got a transfer instead of a pink slip. :-)

That's sadly the norm these days, but I was in a Radio Shack store in downtown Chicago last Christmas while visiting from NZ, and one of the guys (only one, let's not ask too much) actually knew his radios and even went out of his way to pick up one from another store across town while on his way home so I could pick it up the next day before I left town. The funny thing is that one *never* experience people getting upset about other peoples driving and there are apparently few accidents. People know to the millimeter the distance from the trees lining the road to the houses along the road, so they do not get stuck when they drive on the footpath for a while ;-))
