Is there an industry standard for which segment of a 3.5mm stereo plug is designated left or right channel?
Which of L and R then correspopnds to A and B?

On two pairs of stereo earphones I have, the tip is left, ring is right, and sleeve is common.

Dunno about explicit industry standards, but the tip is L (white color code on RCA jacks) and the base (ring) is ground. The middle part (sleeve) is R.
When you have a mono plug/jack you'll only get the left channel as ring & sleeve will be shorted.

In the telephone industry, where Tip, Ring, and Sleeve terms came from, what you call the base is the Sleeve. The Ring is the small ring between the Tip and Sleeve. The Sleeve is common. The colors of the connected wires was application specific.
