Not many folks can get a.b.s.e. these days. My ISP ditched binaries in

2008 and that wiped all other AT&T subscribers off of it as well. Then they ditched all of Usenet and the new service I have doesn't carry binaries either. Same with most others here I'd assume.

No, many of us have (paid) access.

If you still have access you can pretty much gauge how many of us lost binaries last year, by comparing (non-spam) traffic and the variety of posters to those, say, two years ago. But your server might not retain that long. All I've heard, it's pretty dead out there now.

Exactly. The spam infested Usenet is a tiny fraction of what it was five or ten years ago. Apparently the only way one can get the binary groups these days is to pay for the service. Frankly there is little or nothing worth paying for these days anywhere in the Usenet much less over on the binaries. Since the major ISP's have dropped them, the non-spam traffic has dwindled making them less and less appealing. The Usenet is dying and the binaries are leading the way.

Rich Grise found a free means to get to the newsgroups, which works well for me for both reading & posting schematics to abse:

Earthlink uses giganews for its Usenet service and has ABSE. Earthlink is one of the large ISPs.

I find this group as well as a few others quite efficient. I haven't found a single web based forum that comes even close. And that means in all categories, number of quality posts, response speed, etc.

Seriously, is there sufficient useful material on A.B.S.E to warrant paying for a service?

I only pay for a service because Cox' feed is totally unstable, even for text only. ...Jim Thompson

Probably not anymore. It was good while it lasted, before Cuomo caused ISPs to dump it. So easy to share schematics or scope plots. But, all good things must end some day.

I paid individual.de because AT&T completed deep-sixed Usenet :-(

It's very low in cost. Wish they'd do binary for extra charge, but nope.

True.

Eating my words here. I went to the site right after I posted and damned if Baer's post wasn't there.

This isn't entirely accurate - I "found" it by following a link someone else posted here, so I don't deserve credit.

But I am happy with it. :-)

It's free, and I have no idea where they get the money to maintain it. Anybody want to bother to research that one?

I do not consider a.b.s.e dead, there are 80+ posts since 10/1/09. Mostly people that inhabit s.e.d

Roughly from how many different poeple are those? 80 posts in 19 days ain't a whole lot of posts, a.b.s.e. was much more busy two years ago.

You have missed the thrust. I prefer to keep it alive. We can bother or not (i sure as heck cannot do it alone). And so many of us have recently had to get "real" news providers. It will be the sum of our individual choices.
