If the mechanical guys do the job right, alignment pins can eliminate the misalignment.

If course, that's the best solution. LVDS, and such, has done a good job of eliminating coax, as well.

I wonder why krw thinks that LVDS allows you to "eliminate" coax? LVDS is essentially PECL, and offers much the same edge speeds, which means you almost always have to track the connections as terminated transmission lines.

Coax is a superior sort of transmission line (good to 18GHz with SMA connectors) and you'd only use it for logic if you needed very clean and fast edges, but opting for LVDS doesn't eliminate the need to minimise reflections.

You could use a lower supply voltage for the coil-driving current sources. That would be easy and save a bunch of heat.

Yup, right now they are driven from 15V! 5V should be fine. Figuring out how to do the power will be part of the redesign.
