some electrical projects

I bought coax tools and wire and put up an antenna for my Realistic DX-160... until lightening struck my wire and fried my radio. I'm glad I didn't buy that expensive unit on Ebay. Now I have to start over. I have a ground rod driven and I connected the GND terminal on the radio to a 12AWG wire to the ground rod. Where did I go wrong?

I bought a crimper/cutter/stripper that does RJ45 and RJ11 connectors, which I also bought. But what wire goes where on the connectors? Does anyone have a link?

I also bought a USB to RS232 adapter. I have a serial modem, win98 os on a computer built for xp, so windows98 doesn't have all the drivers for the xp hardware. Does that make sense? win98 works ok on the xp machine, but not the modem, which is going to be used for a 56k account. What a mess. I gave the xp recovery disks to my buddy when I gave him the computer, but guess what? He lost them.

I've got 2 air conditioners and a small shop on a 30 amp single pole breaker using 10/2wg wire. No more heavy duty extension cords running through the hallway. I bought a 40 amp single pole breaker just in case. That might stress the 10/2 wire some, but I doubt I'm going to need it. The shop is on

15 amp time delay fuses, which the manual for the table saw recommended. I don't have the manual for the band saw, but the motor is 1/2 horse.

I dug my sheet metal out of the sod to make a metal box for my 8-outlet power strip. It's a little rusty but I think I can use the good part. Nobody I know has a brake, so I'll have to bend it myself with 2x4's. Then I can cut out 8 square holes with my Dremel cutoff tool, wire it up and never run out of outlets.

probably should have bonded a lightning arrestor on the antenna cable to the ground rod.

IIRC XP is EOL now, else you could get a "media kit" for a fraction of the price of a licenced copy from microsoft. (it's just the Cd not the key-code)

hey! wait on! are you trolling me!

Thank you for replying. It's a bit nippy out but I may be able to make some
progress on the power strip. The internet was full of diagrams to wire
RJ11's and RJ45's to connectors. I chanced on that Wikipedia article too.
I bookmarked the lightening arrester, thank you for that as well. I guess
I'm one of the ones with a thick skull who has to learn the hard way. If
I'm going to have an antenna, I'm going to have to ground it properly.

What!? Do you need more than 30A or not? If not, don't use the 40A breaker. If so, upgrade the wire to 8-2 (better, go 2 pole (240v) &

10-3 wire/cable). The purpose of a breaker is to protect the wire connected to it. A 40A breaker does not protect 10 ga wire. And is a code violation, if that matters to you.

They show up new on ebay. They killed the Media Center version for Vista as well. They want you to upgrade to Win 7.

I think the wiring is required to be rated 125% of the rated breaker. So you need wiring for 50A on a 40A line. Thats not to mention the requirements for the load center.

Depending upon the type of wire, and whether it's in a raceway or not, it can be acceptable. You need to look at tables 310.16...18 of the NEC to find out.

NEC has it all spelled out, or get a letriction;)

Cheers
