Frugality is one thing, having an inadequate computer is another - being mean is the negative label for the frugal, but it includes an element of short-changing yourself that frugality doesn't.

Government stimulus has a gain James Arthur and his crew of right-wing nitwits doesn't believe in

You're right, I don't believe it. You believe stuff you don't understand. If the gov't had cash horde saved to spend during a rainy day it might have a temporary, positive effect. If they suck it out of the economy (taxing or borrowing), it hurts, not helps.

It's easy to understand in principle, and the empirical data confirm it.

The economists doing the study concluded exactly as I predicted long ago--the 'stimulus' destroyed net jobs, and the dubious benefit vanished the instant the funds quit. There was no positive feedback, no over-unity gain, no lasting effect, except more debt. No pump- priming. The stimulus wasn't just wasted, it was harmful. Google it.

See, this is Bill Sloman just making up stories about things he can't possibly conceive.

I use things until they're worn out. Then I fix them. Or recycle, when it's time. I'm part American indian--I try to tread lightly on the planet.

I retired ages ago, in my 30's. I work because I like it. I'm damn good at it. I'm not interested in making much, not now, not for

0bama--I won't support him. I won't. Let him make his own money. I could start something new, but I won't.

I can easily afford heating and cooling--those are trivial expenses. This internet link costs me more than twice that. But, unlike Sloman, I actually try to conserve things. Everything. I'm conservative. Creature comforts don't thrill me; I don't take from the earth what I don't need. Supposed luxuries have no value. Rather than an energy glutton, a carbon criminal who lectures others about what they should do, I try to be the opposite.

I don't flaunt what I have, nor do I lust for what isn't mine. I don't care what computer Sloman wasted someone else's money on--that's between him and them. I have about 20 computers. It's enough. My favorite computer is still a 1994 HP OmniBook running Win3.1, on my bed as I write. It's fast. A couple of ThinkPads surf the web.

I can scarcely imagine how mean-spirited, hateful, and full of spite a person would have to be to delight in thinking someone else was going cold in the winter from poverty, let alone taunt them about it. Where I live a person could easily die.

Shame on you Sloman. Some liberal.

I designed a super-efficient passive solar house heater--heats the house for free.

But, there wasn't any need--this past winter was so mild I only ran the heat two or three days the whole season. You know, global warming and all. It saves energy--yet another benefit.

Being "liberal" is mostly about taking, not giving.

Look up "The Fistula Foundation" and then send them $450.

The Feds, the state, and the city take away about half of what my company could invest, and pile on by making employees as expensive as they can make them. Why should I invest in employees under those circumstances?

Stimulus spending is taking that capital and wasting it on government boondoggles and Chinese imports.

James Arthur doesn't know my heating bill or my car mileage, but he's happy to call me an energy glutton and a carbon criminal. The annual flight to and from Australia has been generating about 3 tonnes of CO2, which may put me above the Dutch annual average of 10.5, but I don't drive much and I'm now living in a three-bedroom apartment which doesn't cost a lot to heat, so I could now be below average.

The US average is 17.5 tones, and the Australian average 18.9, so moving back to Australia in October may make me distinctly more criminal, but at the moment his veracity rating isn't all that high.

It was entirely my own money, and cost about 500 euro - nothing dramatic.

=A0My

Really?

Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM, but they should have been. You pay of lot for what you get. It's high quality stuff, but so are Rolls Royce cars, which doesn't make them cost-effective transport.

I don't delight in it - and I can't imagine why you would think that I would. I do see it as a more plausible explanation of your choice than the one you admit to. That obviously doesn't make it true, but this isn't an evidence-rich environment, and your selective reporting of stuff that can be tested doesn't make you a particularly reliable source of information.

Where I come from liberals believe in free trade and largely unbridled free markets. I'm somewhat to the left of - for instance - the Australian Liberal Party and the Dutch VVD.

Hypothermia does kill people, but not people who know what it is - a good quality sleeping bag is enough insulation to prevent it, and much cheaper than heating a whole house for a whole winter.

Americans have odd ideas about what might constitute being a "liberal".

Around the world it usually means somebody committed to free trade and minimal control of the free market, but people who can't tell the difference between a socialist and a communist presumably see liberals as being the left of reactionary libertarian conservatives who favour the revival of the Klu Klux Klan and the occasional lynching.

There is a endless supply of people who need help. John Larkin isn't well enough informed to be a reliable guide to the most deserving cases.

And where is this written up? If memory serves, the only jobs counted were those paid for directly out of the stimulus pot, which isn't a particularly sensible way of evaluating spending which is primarily aimed at increasing general activity in the economy.

Actually, I believe stuff that you don't understand. It's an unsubtle distinction.

As I seem to have explained to you before, it's borrowed from people who have declined to invest it productively because there's a recession going on. It wasn't doing anything useful before it was borrowed, so borrowing it doesn't do any harm. The temporary positive effect is to persuade people that the recession isn't as bad as it looked, provoking them into investing some of the cash that they had been sitting on. This is just as irrational as not investing because the economy is in recession, but more helpful in reviving the economy.

Which you can't be bothered to cite, because it's your kind of empirical data - collected by people who know the answer that they want to get.

The Internet is full of nonsense - you need to identify the specific bit of nonsense that you think we ought to be taking seriously. One of the more depressing aspects of economics is that there is always an economist who can perform a study that will support any desired point of view, no matter how bizarre. I'm sure you can find somebody who is welling to claim that pump-priming doesn't work, in exactly the same way you were able to find a study that claimed that Roosevelt's New Deal had nothing to do with the US recovery from the Great Depression, along with the one that tells the real truth about the aliens that landed at Roswell.

The Greeks weren't indulging in pump-priming - tax evasion and large scale corruption were the crucial problems that created a mountain of debt that left them incapable of indulging in pump-priming when they really needed it.

Bizarre. Everywhere I turn people are investing in encouraging innovation - that strikes me as thinking about the longer term development of the economy. What would you see as a long term investment? Slowing down anthropogenic global warming would definitely qualify, if you knew enough to understand that anthropogenic global warming is real and a threat ...

you feel better,

Stimulating an economy in recession may "feel good", whatever that might mean. It happens to be an effective way of getting the economy out of recession, if you get the dose right.

Once the economy is running close to capacity, extra stimulation would be a very bad idea - provoking competition for scarce resources, and creating inflation.

The analogy with drugs of addiction is - in fact - fatuous. Nobody craves stimulus spending - it's a rational response to a situation that is only detectable by the rational examination of statistical evidence - and the people injecting the stimulus into the economy have to wait for months before there's any evidence of a response. That's delayed gratification, which is the last thing an addict looks for.

Because you could make money on the work that they did for you? Move to an isolated Pacific island, and see how many useful employees you can hire.

It was income when the Feds, the state and the city took it away. You could have invested it, but you claim not to be investing the income stream you've got left, so describing the proportion of the income that they took as capital is misleading - to put it kindly.

A drone never works. I worked for most of my adult life and then got stuck with early retirement when I was 61. I got unemployment benefit

- as an (unsuccessful) job seeker - until I turned 65, nearly five years ago. Since then I've been getting some pension income, which isn't any kind of dole.

This isn't the first time you've published this libel, nor the first time that I've pointed out that you wrong, which makes you a persistently deceitful creep.

And even a drone on the dole could recognise an economic flat-earther. It's a condition that's easy to diagnose.

Why do you think that? I imagine that you are assuming that most of the stimulus money gets spent on cheap hardware, which happens to be manufactured in China, which is unlikely to be true, and neglecting the fact that at least half the money paid out by consumers for this sort of product stays with the importers and distributors in the US.
