That's because many of the government organizations exist to infuse money i= nto their local economy and for no other purpose. They are well-known to be= scams. Now that the government is broke, and will likely remain broke for = the foreseeable future, at least some of this waste will be eliminated.

Lets take it in two steps. Too many non-academically able kids are going to college and studying subjects with little or no merit. Meedja Studdies is the worst case modern wasters course in the UK.

This gets to the heart of the matter. It is not for universities to churn out people trained to do "what employers really want". The purpose of universities is to teach students how to think, express their arguments in a concise and coherent form and how to research something new from scratch using libraries and now the internet. These are all transferable skills and highly relevant to business.

Employers should be prepared to *train* their employees and not just aim to poach already trained individuals from the handful of decent companies and employers that do invest in their people.

I know universities now that have to run remedial maths and English classes for some science undergraduates. These people would be much better off in a German style trade school learning to be plumbers or electricians. They don't learn much and waste three years doing it.

I think putting Fine Arts at the head of the list has more than a bit of vindictive philistinism about it. Same with the inclusion of music - most of the people I know with music degrees are fully employed.

I am also surprised to see Architecture so high up the list and wonder if it is a sampling effect (they are not in the labour market because it takes more than 3 years to become fully qualified).

I suppose it's even worse if you're the one at a bank in charge of payroll and you're having to garnish your own wages... :-)

Indeed, my parents were/are music majors. A couple cousins, too. Turns out Dad wound up in a CS job, and actually got himself a CS degree to prove it. Seems like every other member of my familiy has either music or engineering talent, sometimes both.

Others here have similar stories, and I doubt that's by coincidence.

That's what employers want, along with some practical idea of which direction is up. Engineering is like that.

Engineering is a practical art. If you can't do *something* out of the gate, why bother with you?

My wife was in Fine Arts at UIUC (one of the better voice schools). She didn't get her degree, though. She had to work so I could afford tuition.

As they should be doing at the moment. The US economy is on the edge of recession and the business community is too nervous to invest in increasing it's productivity, so it's government stimulus spending or bust.

Any new hire is going to have to learn the politics and procedures. That's not the point. Why hire an engineer who can't do engineering when there are plenty of others available who can? Saving a few bucks on a newly minted grad makes no sense, particularly when few have *any* practical experience (and their theory is suspect, anymore).

In other words, "it makes no sense to invest in future performance"?

I'm not privvy to James' finances, but he doesn't seem impoverished to me; he seems to be genetically frugal, and enjoys it. I think he may have made a bundle on some spread-spectrum inventions and works mostly for fun now. He does some inventing too, which isn't usually cash-positive in the early stages.

He also has very little sensitivity to cold. He almost always skis in short pants. I was more exothermic, too, when I was a youngster like him. Now I wear jeans to ski, most days.
