It seems that nearly everything maps onto circles on the Smith chart -- changing transmission line length, varying one of resistance, inductance, or capacitance while holding the others constant, stability circles -- they could all be made with a compass and pencil.

The circles represent reactance. For example, if you go from below the Z=3DR line (the one that goes from the right side to the left side) , you would go from capacitance to inductance.

Also, do not forget to normalize the impedance: i.e. 50 ohms for a radio circuit 75 for a cable TV circuit.
