What about the 34063, You can find variants in just about every automotive cell phone charger.

LM5006 looks good, claims 92% efficiency at 50mA and 90% efficiency down to 2mA

I guess that makes it about 40% better than a 78L05

ROHM do an integrated switcher in a TO-220 package, fine for play but not cheap if prod is your intention.

I'm pretty sure those cheapo eBay buck converter modules are just implementations of the reference design from the IC datasheet. Could you work with that?
