what you could use is a "passive repeater" antenna

is there any DIY solution for active repeaters?
I'm mainly interested in UMTS active repeaters (even tough a "base" GSM solution will be enough), but I didn't find any cheap solution...
I wonder why WiFi repeaters, which seem to be quite more complex toys, are a lot cheaper...
Just buy a car kit, a 12Volt power supply, some good coax and RF connectors. Extend the antenna cable on the car kit.

Many thanks, but... ...this is not a good solution for my problem: I want to improve signal strength in a small building; car amplifiers are limited to the phone which is connected to the antenna plug... :-(
as an example, I have a multi-standard HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS/GSM modem (HUAWEI e220) which has no external antenna plug at all...
Give google a try with "gsm cell extender". There are many out there. But not cheap at all. Don't know, if it works with HSDPA/UMTS/.., too.

How about a "passive repeater"? You just put an antenna in a "good reception" area, with a cable to another, identical antenna somewhere in the "poor reception" area. Of course, the antennae have to be tuned to the freq. that your unit is operating on.
Good Luck! Rich
