I'm looking to get started using PIC microcontrollers and was looking for a good forum for discussing the basics. Questions like, given that I want to run an PIC18 microcontroller at 40 MHz, for the external clock, would it be better to use a ceramic resonator or a crystal (presumably with the required parallel resistor and two capacitors).
So, is this the right newsgroup? Are there better online forums for this topic?

Most of the PIC 18 chips, _will not_ run at 40MHz, with an external crystal or resonator (they will with a complete external oscillator). The maximum internal oscillator frequency is usually 25Mhz, but the chips have a *4 PLL, and you run the oscillator at 10Mhz, with the PLL enabled,to have the chip run at 40MHz. A crystal will be more accurate in general, the resonator will be cheaper. Microchip have a fairly good forum. Particular software development tools/kits, will have their own sites.
