OT? When Computer Controls Fail

This was a burger/ice cream joint. Everything ran on electricity and even if it didn't, they woudn't have any lights or be able to run the register. They were CLOSED! Power was out for one evening. They weren't going to do much since virtually no one would have come in.

None of this has to do with raw meat but I've been in several restaurants when the power has failed. They got by just fine.

If the typical duty cycle of a given problematic load is on the order of

1-50%, then the correct sequencing of, on the order of 2-100 units, will lead to the best improvement in ripple.

Both. The less peak capacity that's required, the closer to nominal they can operate, and for a greater percentage of the day.

Which leads to a greater proportion of baseline generating capacity*, and reduced capital costs (for having to install extra lines and bigger transformers, and on-demand generators), and greater payoffs (peak-load generators aren't sitting idle for as long between peaks).

Likewise, peaks cause brownouts (like you say, often with point causes). Diffusing points into neighborhoods, and providing an "out" for excess capacity (by dumping low-priority loads), puts a hard limit on the maximum power consumption of any given group under control.

*In the sense of: available generating capacity (as a function of time-of-day) minus actual load (as a function of time-of-day). It helps to think of "baseline" as varying during the day, as expensive and intermittent sources (like solar and wind) peak during the day. Storage systems (batteries, thermal salt tanks..) help to smooth this out, applying a filter of whatever time constant and generating capacity they offer.

Then, what are you complaining about?

If they intentionally used less insulation, because they are expecting a greater ROI on their operation (value of product moved in and out of the freezer), than operating cost saved by the additional insulation, then...what's the problem? I see nothing wrong here!

That is, costs including refrigeration, purchase of product, and the average or amortized cost of decade-scale failures and subsequent loss of product, business downtime, and restocking cost.

If your freezer gets wiped out, from an accident every 10 years, and the stock value is, say, $3,000, and you lose say $1000 from a week's business, that's only $400/year equivalent!

If the ledger balances nicely this way, then they used "just the right" amount of insulation, certainly not "skimping"!

Now, if they were preserving, I don't know what, but something a lot more expensive than food but just as prone to spoilage (Idunno, biological samples, maybe cryogenic so the stakes are higher too?) -- it might be well worth the added investment.

The University of NSW (also in Sydney) is even lower-ranked but does have a very lively physics department, with world-leading work on quantum-computing hardware. I go to IEEE-sponsored public lectures at both place from time to time.
