OT: What to do with VW Diesel?

According to one VW dealer, the owner of vehicles right before the news broke will get the $5000. Which does not make much sense. In this case, all used VW diesel vehicles should be priced $5000 lower.

Sure, that's what happens when stocks go ex-dividend. I would have put the threshold at announcement + 30 days, or some such, though. It'll keep people from mining junk yards. ;-)

Actually it's both. Diesel fuel contains more energy per unit volume AND diesel engines are more efficient.

However the efficiency advantage of diesel engines is disappearing as gasoline engines become more advanced, and diesel engines are burdened with additional emissions equipment that reduces fuel economy.
