OT: Seismographs

Not if you want people to watch your news show. In fact, I was in the latest 5.2; well, half-way from the epicenter to LA; the news station I happened to be watching had a live drum recorder running. I felt the aftershock while watching the needle register it. It was pretty kewl. ;-)

Cheers! Rich

Those are just for show. All the data is actually digital (most of it is 24 bit these days) and is stored as compressed time series files. Those drums are run by D/A convertor boxes from the digital data (I designed a box called a DAC480 back in the 1990s for that purpose).

There is also software out there that can convert the digital data to be printed on a laser printer, producing a printout that looks very similar to a drum recording, without all the hassle.

Well, for over a decade California has been instrumenting bridges with MEMS force balance accelerometers and digital recorders. It must be the talking heads and hairball producers who cannot conceive of better tech.

There is a very good chance the TV stations are using stock footage. In the business that, or 35 mm slides were used in what was termed 'Actualities', meaning the report was live, but the visuals were whatever was available from their library. BTDT, and repaired lots of damaged slides.

Actually for long term reliable battery operated kit i could not even recommend near normal linux. Especially if real time performance is required.

Well duh. No off the shelf 'near normal' O/S is going to be satisfactory for a low power app. Lots of cruft will have to be stripped out, file systems and the kernel will have to be optimized. And unless you are running on a desktop or server (pointless to optimize these for battery powered apps), drivers for custom h/w will have to be written.

You start with Vista as a base line, I'll start with Linux and we'll see who gets there first and with less cost. Whoops. Cost already killed Vista out of the gate.

Vista is not my friend. No M$ os will ever be real time. If you need hard real time, the OS is minimal, fast and reliable. Hatley and Pirbhai wrote a books on the subject and i read one. Pretty good stuff. Battery powered stuff can be a very different challenge.
