yes they need something for left right, if it had four rotors, I think it could work with just four individual collectives
imagine that instead of a swash plate controlling one rotor, same control going to the collective on the four corners
got at bit convoluted I guess :)
you have four rotors 1-2-3-4, 1-3 rotate one direction, 2-4 the other direction so torque from 1-3 cancels torque from 2-4
to go in the direction of 1 you increase speed on 3, since torque on
1-3 still needs to match torque of 2-4, speed of 1 needs to be decreased-Lasse
