No one picked up on the use of the singular - missile? I guess using the term "all" made it too much to get.

That is one way to disarm North Korea. Call their bluff and let them launch! Do we really not have the ability to shoot down missiles still?

Decoys or no taking 15 seconds to draw your gun in a gun fight is a dangerous gamble. Your opponent is going to do something, they're not going to do nothing.

No you and I don't know but I think it's difficult to keep large construction projects totally secret from above, even underground ones. You gotta put the dirt somewhere.

They have discovered tunnels deep inside S.K. Many are still undiscovered. Don't underestimate what a million starving solders can do.

Nah I didn't get it my bad...on Usenet everyone is pretty fast and loose with the grammar and typos etc. so the eyes tend to pass over stuff like that without registering. A missing letter is a little too subtle.

As far as I know, the US is the only country that fires two ICBMs a year, to test reliability, accuracy and readiness.

Every six months, they randomly select a specific Minuteman III missile, pull the warhead and replace with a data package, and ship to Vandenburg AFB, with the missile crew from that missile wing. They put the missile in the silo, and go into the launch control center. Then, USSTRATCOM sends an Emergency Action Notification to the crew, they go through the whole procedure of opening the safe, entering crypto keys, putting keys into the locks and turning simultaneously. The missile heads toward Kwajalein in the Pacific, and they locate the point of splashdown with radar and hydrophones to grade the accuracy.

So, other than the warheads, which are pretty old tech and fairly reliable, we KNOW the missiles will work. Not so sure if any other country

What Cursitor Doom is suggesting is killing off tens of millions of human b eings because he don't find their current government sympathetic to his par ticular collection of silly ideas.

Nothing Cursitor Doom posts makes any kind of sense, and this is just as de mented as the rest of his output.

Amongst other deficits, it does ignore the fact that China would react rath er unfavourably to the experience of being nuked, so anybody with nuclear w eapons who had been silly enough to take Cursitor Doom's advice would lose an appreciable chunk of their own population and productive capacity.

Quite what the post-apocalyptic world would look like is hard to imagine, but it seems unlikely to be one where life would be easy or comfortable, an d the practical demands of keeping life going would lead to rather authorit arian governments everywhere - the current Chinese regime would look libera l by comparison.

There actually is NO "hydrogen bomb". The US actually built one to test the theory -- That was code named Ivy Mike. It was a big tank of cryogenic liquid deuterium. Totally not deployable, it was the size of a 2-story apartment building. We then weaponized it by adsorbing the deuterium onto lithium. It was later built into a deliverable weapon, the 4 megaton Mark

  1. But, apparently, there really is no strategic reason for such a large device, and also the cost of maintaining the deuterium whick leaks away over time is a big hassle. So, as far as I know, these large devices have been removed from service.

Anyway, almost all the later devices were of lesser yield, but much lighter, and used a tiny bit of lithium deuteride to improve efficiency of the fission devices. Due to the need for a chemical explosive to change the mechanical confguration of the primary plutonium device by implosion, the primary needs to be made with a fairly small amount of plutonium, to prevent nuclear reactions during accidents (fires and plane crashes). So, they use the Teller-Ulam design of a primary fission device to trigger a fission secondary, which may be configured as a long, hollow pipe, with some lithium deuteride in the middle to extend the time of the fission reaction.

So, all modern nuclear devices apper to be two-stage fission devices with a little boost from fusion to improve yield. In other words, there is no H- bomb.

No, not really. We do have the ability to shoot down a single or couple of missiles in the very earliest boost stage, if our ship happens to be close to the launch site. They pretty much have to know a launch is imminent and have their radar pointed at the right spot and their hand on the key, as there is likey just a few second window to be able to knock it down.

We really don't have an ability to knock an incoming missile down. They are coming in at some 6000 MPH. Mostly due to arms control treaties, we don't have a fully deployed system. It would be impossible to support a system to defend against Russia or China, and so we really didn't push for such a system. Now that North Korea and maybe some terrorist organizations might be the source, one can imagine a system that could cover the threat, but then there's those treaties.

They were made obsolete by improvements in delivery accuracy; usually you'd prefer a more accurate lighter weapon with more range than a heavier one with more yield. more max range also in theory lets you do stuff like fly depressed trajectories at shorter ranges and get to the target faster.

You can always throw more missiles at the target (and several smaller warheads, like a cluster bomb, quickly become more destructive than one large one, pound for pound), but if none of them have the range cuz the warhead is too heavy you're SOL

Teller-Ulam is fission-fusion-fusion-fission; a fission primary that's yield-boosted by fusion of deuterium and tritium gas in the core of the plutonium pit, radiation compression of the solid lithium deuteride fusion fuel, and then that causes secondary fission of the composite tamper which is usually part u-238.

I think you're confusing the fusion boosting of the fission primary with the fusion secondary, the boosting of the primary is gas-boosting AFAIK the secondary is solid.

A good portion of the yield in modern weapons can come from fission of the tamper; they reduced the yield of Tsar Bomba from 100 megatons to 50 by replacing it with lead. So it doesn't _have_ to be any particular way you can build a fairly "clean" weapon where the yield is mostly fusion but it's going to be heavier and less efficient, or a more compact, efficient one that leans more on tamper fission.

A lot of the supercomputer work to make 'em small I think is related to figuring out the novel geometries you need to fit it neatly in small re-entry vehicles and/or minimize the weight and maximize efficiency, like making the package an oblate spheroid like a football, and how to sequence the implosion of those shapes. There are probably others they aren't telling.

Right, assuming all that whiz-bang stuff would work even close to 100% outside of test conditions is a big gamble.

My girlfriend's ex-roommate had a BS in Pol Sci from GW or somesuch, she worked for the state government at age 28 yearly salary of pushing 100k (matter of public record.)

Couldn't tell ya what she did exactly it seemed like she was home half the time using online dating sites and on the phone with friends. After Trump was elected she went on to work for ICE I think.

We didn't have theater ballistic missile systems there, we had the Patriot. It was a 1981 system designed mostly to shoot down aircraft and cruise missiles, at which is is quite good. It was never really designed for defense against even short-range ballistic missiles. But, with on-board radar terminal guidance, it can mostly do it.

And, they had an issue where the clocks on the radar and the launcher needed to be resynchronized every few days, and in at least one case they didn't do that and they got far enough out of sync that they had a near miss.
