I saw their ad in the recent AARP magazine a neighbor gave us. But the basic talk plan is already more than what I pay and need. And $31 for
100MB isn't such a great deal. On my carrier (Virgin Mobile) that almost gets you 1GB. Well, now plus the commie taxes for CA.That's my other concern. I have a Nokia 2115i, a basic "phone-phone". If that ever breaks they don't have new ones for the cheap no-contract plans. They also don't advertize those plans anymore, probably want to get rid of pay-go plans.

If the domain isn't included that would add $35/year or so AFAIK.

I could but if the sent emails are not coming via my domain that leaves a not so professional aftertaste for business.

Check out GoDaddy's registration prices. I pay $15.17 for two domains. ...Jim Thompson

Use the domain. I have ~275 E-mail addresses ;-) Makes sorting easy with Eudora. ...Jim Thompson

There's no reason to have your hosting and email with the same company. My mail is Rackspace and my hosting is GoDaddy. GoDaddy is pretty cheap but irritating because they don't let an rsync daemon run on their side, so I have to use rsync over sshfs. They kill the sftp session after a few minutes, so it usually takes a few goes. Rackspace email works great.

Domain name registration has nothing to do with hosting. You can own a domain name without hosting it. Don't mix up the two.

Make that _three_ domains. I forgot that I still own liberalsaredummies.com >:-}
I need to do something with that... maybe start blogging ;-) ...Jim Thompson

You are confusing the "from" address from the ISP or mail provider. They don't have to be related. I once sent an email to a friend from "god.org" to show her how easy it is to set that.

Your
I don't mind the cost whether $17 or $35. But it's one more hassle not to forget the renewal and stuff. Happened to a biz friend and that was a major issue because some pilferer snapped it up. 1and1 always took care of the domain registration.
A venting place? :-)

However, nowadays most hosting companies offer one-stop shop. You drop the credit card numbers and they'll take care of all that. 1and1 hosts my web site, email, ftp and takes care of keeping up the domain name. I like things simple.

It still shows though, in the source. OTOH I am close to easing into retirement so maybe I just shouldn't care about such details anymore.
-- Regards, Joerg http://www.analogconsultants.com/
Yes, it certainly is an idea.

Shouldn't happen. I have auto-renewal set up.
Perhaps ;-) ...Jim Thompson

We have so many accounts tied to the domain/email. Can't afford to lose it .
I was doing domain/email admin for a while part-time. It got so time consu ming that we switched to startlogic just for email. First year was OK ($4/ month), but next year ($12/month). We will probably switch back to our own .
First of all, you can get blocked by domain and/or IP. The only sure way i s to lease a dedicated IP ($1/month) that don't get spammed. When you get a new IP, you might need to go through all the troubles of clearing it out. With the new IP, build a virtual server, point it to root name servers, r un replicating name servers, etc.
Still looking for a site for the servers. Downtown SF is reliable for powe r, but only slow DSL. Sonic is supposed to build giga-bit ethernet in the sunset area. That was several years ago and still waiting.
I think you mis-spelled that. It should be libertariansaredummies.com
So far the blocking always happened because the perfora server (run by
1and1) got blacklisted. I need to switch to a host that is more competent in preventing spam through their outgoing mail servers.
We are really in the boonies when it comes to that. Finally AT&T came through with 6Mbps DSL. But they are pushing hard to get people to take U-Verse so I am hoping they won't ditch stand-alone DSL. We have absolutely no need for a TV package deal because we barely watch anything (just ain't worth it).
I'd like to keep things simple. One host that takes care of my web site, email, FTP and ideally also the domain registration and renewal. That's what I have with 1and1 but they have become unreliable for email.

I haven't found a hosting provider who won't handle your domain name registration. Just don't expect it to be part of the hosting price. It will always be additional, in fact, some will give you hosting for free if you register through them since it is pretty marked up already and hosting can be dirt cheap.
