OT: Food

On the "new" food pyramid, does peanut butter and jelly on wheat bread count as fruits and vegetables? ;-)

BTW, I just bought a peach this morning at the store, and it was fantastic. The best-tasting peach I've ever had, with just the right amount of juiciness, and I think it's called "freestone" - all of the peachy "stuff" had already separated from the pit. I ate half the peach, and the pit just practically fell out.

I'm tempted to go get a dozen of them - how do you store tree-ripe peaches? Just stick them in the fridge? They're at just that peak of ripeness that I'd be afraid they'd spoil right away. )-;

Thanks! Rich

Peanut butter's made from peanuts AFAIK so no luck there. Fruit jellies do have some fruit in them of course !

Sadly much fruit sold in supermarkets here is unripe becasue they don't want any issues with poor 'freshness'. I bought 6 peaches a week or so ago and had to let them ripen first.

That's the problem with fruit. Must go and finish that pink grapefruit in the fridge btw !

Not seen freestone peaches in years, only cling-stone. Asking the store clerk doesn't help, either. They don't even know the difference anymore. Maybe the roadside fruit stands might be worth trying.

All the peaches I've put in the refrigerator have gotten ripe just the same in a couple days.

BTW. Don't *ever* store bananas in a refrigerator.

This is peak season for fruits in California [1]. Look for the silly flat peaches, called "saturn" or "turban" or "donut" peaches.

The Washington cherries are fantastic lately too, about a big as those small plums, which are pretty good too, whatever they're called.

They do. I wash them and put them on a plate in the frige. If you leave them in that plastic bag they won't be good overnight.

Fresh peaches are rare in most places but you can always find those tasteless things with the consistancy of a raw potato.

The skins turn black, but the insides do keep longer there.
