OT: Findfast again :-(

Findfast seems to have a mind of its own.

Even though "indexing" is turned off, Findfast persists in running (WinXP Pro).

Findfast has its pros and cons... it's helpful except when indexing slows the machine down.

Any way to force it to run on a _schedule_, say midnight to 5AM, so it's not annoying?

Thanks!

How is that helpful? I store my work in dedicated areas, strictly separated by clients and then I don't need a Windows gizmo to help me find it.

Most tips pages seem to recommend to turn it off, like this one:

If you absolutely hafta use it there is AFAIK still the Task Scheduler that can be used to manually enable and then shut down certain Windows helpers. For example, people use that to automatically start their disk defragmenters at night. But it might be good to pop open a bottle of nice red wine (I am sure you have one or two...) and invite over your computer whizkid son ;-)

Now if anyone knows a good and "quiet" virus checker I'd appreciate a hint. Many have dropped Win2k now. I find most too intrusive and a burden on my productivity.

Lord Garth (Thank you, Sir) walked me thru killing the nasty parts of Wimpows.

I'm sure I can now find a way to index on demand only.

Great.

There used to be a program called something like "Google Personal". It made my entire file collection searchable just like the Internet but only for myself. I tried it a long time ago, it worked well, but I found that I did not need an indexer at all.

I tried their AVG and it really slowed down the PC :-(

I mean, why does it always have to scan the whole drive? AFAICT you can only select between all or nothing.

Set it to run at lunchtime or just run it once a week, if you're behind a good firewall. You can still let it run in the background to check email, and right click on downloads to scan a single or a few items in a folder. I've used it for years, after I found that it can fix damaged drives that both McAfee and Norton claimed had to be reformatted.

Lunchtime is too short here :-)

I haven't had any serious threats come through in years, thanks to a hardware firewall. Then again, I never open email attachments from unknown sources or visit shady web sites.

That's the real answer, hardware firewall, toss unknown sources, and watch where you roam ;-)

I visit shady places all the time: like .gov, .com, .org, and .info, not to mention newsgroups in sci.electronics.*.
