I think that the principle is that land is expensive in the Netherlands, an d while the Dutch can make more (Mark Twain wasn't entirely right) engineer ing the bridge to fit the land the municipality can afford makes better eco nomic sense than trying to buy (or make) enough land to make the engineerin g easy.

Not all Dutch engineers are as crazy as Jan, but some of them have their mo ments.
