That's an old, old chestnut, and it proves nothing. Particle physics has had big bucks poured into it for what, 60 years now? (Not counting the Manhattan Project--nuclear has produced useful things.) When the Faraday effect was 60 years old, it was powering half the world.

Somebody pointed out long ago that the further the energy scale gets from kT, the fewer the useful results.

If you take enough smart people and pour enough money over them, they can't help doing something good once in awhile. But that doesn't mean they wouldn't have been better off doing something useful.

OK more or less agree on manned flight, but maybe LEO is "interesting"just as a starting point, if not much else, if we don't do that, we will never get any where.

Actually, a lot of the stuff that Fermi worked on has yet to produce a technologically useful result -- weak interaction physics, the physics of sustained thermonuclear fusion, etc.

There is often a lag of five to ten decades before fundamental research surfaces in practical applications.

This was true in Newton's day, in Lavoisiere's day, in Kelvin's day.

Sure, we all have our failures. But the record of particle physics--as particle physics, not Beef Byproducts like the WWW--is zero useful results, over 60 years.
