they tend to have high leakage inductance, could work I guess.
I have a piece of string, if I tie 2 loops in it can I use it as an anchor rope?
Of course it can. The question is what do you want to do with the DC? Weld? How much current? Peak current? Short circuit current? Load? Regulation? Ripple? What you do depends answers to these and other questions.
Is this an arc welder with a "humping big" transformer in it or does it have electronics inside?
