Moving Eudora to a New Machine

My Win 8 machine is having convulsions and I figured it is time to get a ne w one.

I'm moving Eudora over to a Win 10 machine and I am getting a strange error message,

"Can't start Eudora the first time with attachments

Please start Eudora by double clicking the icon or by the command line"

I'm not even sure what this means. What attachments are there for Eudora? I'm pretty sure I don't have any. I'm guessing it is not finding the .ini file?

Win 10 sets up a bit differently than any other windows I've used. It aske d me to set up an email account then used that as my user name. So the user name is not the same between the two machines. I had to edit the deudora.ini file line from this

DataFolder=C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Eudora

to

DataFolder=C:\Users\ColdW\AppData\Eudora

But that's where all the mail folders are, so it should be right.

I'm not sure what else there is to change. Any clues?

I'm wondering if this is an issue with Windows faking out the location of r ead/write data files when installed in the Program Files directory? That's why there is a deudora.ini file. That is read to find the location of the eudora.ini file which is where all the real info is stored. Could Windows be messing with this and not showing Eudora *any* .ini file so it thinks i t is starting cold?

You should post your question to Newsgroup: comp.mail.eudora.ms-windows

However only wusses let Wimpows destroy the performance of legacy programs...

In Win7 I cured all such problems by installing Eudora under my own (main, not under Programs) directory "MyApps"... INCLUDING any Data directories.

(I have TEN legacy programs installed under "MyApps"... all working just fine.) ...Jim Thompson

I did, yesterday and the fact that you don't know that clearly shows the ne ed to post it somewhere else.

I tried that as well and I get the same error message.

If you installed features/add-ons to Eudora over the years you have to turn them off. So you have to clear the .ini file and reintroduce the add-ons after you get it running. Try renaming the .ini file and relaunch.

Personally I prefer Thunderbird over Eudora - it is the branch that grew after all...

Nope. It just shows that I ignore such topics as they are best left to the experts such as Wissink and Bieber. I only follow those Eudora topics where _I'm_ having issues.

As someone else has just posted... it's probably an issue with the INI file needing patching to accommodate the location changes.

You're a smart-ass... you'll figure it out ;-) ...Jim Thompson

Thanks for the suggestion.

I renamed the deudora.ini file and I get the same error message. The eudor a.ini file is in a different directory and without the deudora.ini file tel ling it where to find the eudora.ini file I don't see how it can be reading anything .ini at this point.

I used Thunderbird for newsgroup access and it sucks pretty badly. Then it lost access to all the group files. I switch to Seamonkey which is a clos e cousin and read in all my information and history, but it sucks even wors e. Maybe they will run better on this machine but I'm a long way from bein g happy with email on it. Email is my archive of everything I do in my bus iness. I don't trust TB as yet.

Well, I've not run business vital stuff (accounting and email) on PCs for many years, having been a MAC guy since osX came out. Neither has my osX Thunderbird ever let me down - and my email archives go back to the mid 90s.

When I was last on a PC I used AGENT for usenet. I must confess I liked it better than Eudora/Thunderbird at the time, but am used to TB's usenet handling and am happy with it.

I switched to Thunderbird a few years ago, and while the process was a bit painful, it eventually worked, and I too have e-mail files dating back to t he 1990's.

I do use Thunderbird for newsgroup access from time to time (via Eternal Se ptember) and it isn't great, but I blame the Eternal September server for m ost of the problems I see. I find that Google Groups works a whole lot bett er for newsgroup access, but some of the more tradition-bound posters here don't like it.

I am moving Eudora to another machine and I couldn't seem to get it to work with this same error. A google search didn't find the answer... again, bu t eventually I remembered that there is a Eudora newsgroup where I found th e answer. So that I won't have to rummage around so much if I do this agai n... here are all the steps I needed to take to port Eudora between PCs.

  1. Copy contents of C:\Program Files (x86)\Eudora\ directory to same place on new machine.
  2. Copy contents of C:\Users\AppData\Eudora directory to same p lace on new machine, adjusted for new user name if needed.
  3. If user name has changed, edit deudora.ini changing path in "DataFolder =" to point to the directory in step 2 above.
  4. This is the tricky one I keep forgetting and causes the error "Cannot st art Eudora the first time with attachments." The shortcut has to be edited to add the data directory as a parameter to the command like this...

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Eudora\Eudora.exe" "C:\Users\\AppData\Eu dora"

No need to change the "Start in" directory as that will point to the deudor a.ini file although I'm not sure what good that does since it isn't suffici ent to point Eudora to the data directory.

Anyway, these steps got my Eudora working under Win 10. I'm posting this h ere and in the Eudora newsgroup for my own use if nothing else. This shoul d show up in Google searches in the future.
