We did/do VME modules for their test stands. We simulate RTDs, thermocouples, oil debris sensors, synchros and LVDTs, weird stuff like that. Other people put the systems together and do the software.

The aerospace companies used to design their own test electronics, but as the EEs retire they are not being replaced.

I didn't insult MEs. I merely noted how hard is for them to know what's actually going on deep inside a running engine, and how easy it is for us to probe a circuit.

Driving a good car or motorcycle is joy. I love MEs for that. And yes, an engine uses 100+ years of painfully acquired knowledge.

But it wasn't.

I was just thinking that while watching a video of a mechanic rebuilding a transmission. Layers and layers and layers of gears and clutches and gaskets and snap rings. Just drawing a diagram of it would be Herculean labor, let alone designing it.

Since they are using raw materials instead of components, they can predict performance by calculation with less experimentation and measurement, so it doesn't matter that there is much they can't measure, but that's also an amazing feat.

Imagine calculating the stress on a gear tooth in a differential, or the dynamic pressure distribution in the exhaust manifold. The software to do that won't be free or easy to learn.

I doubt they knew I'd be climbing onto steam valves. At least the exposure was of short duration.

To learn? Are you gonna trust a software sales pitch, or are you gonna WRITE the software? Heck, I've had cause to rewrite SPICE on occasion, there's nothing confidence-building in storebought software.

Case in point: has the stupidquotes bug been fixed recently, that you've noticed? Even technophobes (my sister, for one) have seen that one.

Just the data entry part of a mechanical or thermal analysis program is likely more than you'd want to take on; like rewriting SolidWorks. A schematic is trivial compared to a differential.

Learning how to use SolidWorks isn't trivial. Do you use SolidWorks?

ASCII and typewriters use single-quote (apostrophe) and double-quote, but printers distinguish left-curved and right-curved variants (left-quote is reverse from right-quote). And then a smart editor decides which one you want, and suddenly you've got escape sequences or unicode characters that you didn't type. MS and Apple and Linux and printer fonts and reader softwares: there's dozens of ways to mess up an apostrophe.

A couple of years ago, I had a solution to get a Macintosh database printout to render a proper possessive apostrophe when viewed on an Android phone, but... I can't find my notes, and it's broken again.

Read-only, yeah, but for composition, I've just watched the mechanical guys jockey around. When I need geometry, I make a coordinate system and compute dot products, normal vectors... doing the same thing on a computer instead of on paper isn't a big leap.
