modern RS232 ports

I was looking at their PCIe equalizers, but all I can seem to find online is "product briefs." Do they expect me to register, or email, to see datasheets?

No problem; I'll just buy National or Pericom.

That really bothers me also. A lot of business sites want you to look at their products so that you can get interested how ever, they want you to log in, set up and account and all that jerky crap. I just click back on the browser and go to the next hit. Keyences is a good example of this in a recent encounter.

Not really news; one famous accelerator did a nonlinear trick with three-phase transformers to generate a 3rd harmonic of the line input, for an early Cockroft-Walton design. Their fame was due to the squawking from the power utility about the terrible power factor to that particular customer. Their power wasn't billed according to the power factor, according to the common usage in that (antique) time.

The higher frequency means all the C-W capacitors can be scaled down for a given current, which is a big win. It's why the horizontal retrace (in TV sets) was used with tripler rectifiers to create HV. That horizontal retrace is a 'free' high frequency high current source.

Somehow archive.org often gets past the registration issues. I often get information via that route rather than register. Archive.org is great for discontinued items you find at surplus shops. Companies don't want to give you data on the old product when they can sell you something new.

Also some of these sites don't bother with sending you an email to verify the email address, so just fill in some crap name and email address and see if it works.

Lastly, there is bugmenot.com, though geeky places often don't have passwords. If you must register, use the mailinator.

I had a dozen students at the University of Southern Mississippi each order 8 Maxim samples for me. I paid them the book price. Everybody was happy.

But it is certainly not the only possible architecture. It is likely for the instance under discussion.
