Linux supported digital IO

A friend needs a Linux supported on/off IO port. It looks like it must be USB as other things are busy.

Any suggestions as to an accessory offering same? He literally needs one or two channels of contact closure/LED-driving output....

Google.

For a one-off hobby project the Velleman K8055 springs to mind. Cheap, available off the shelf. The ULN2803 open collector output chip can control things like small DC motors for hobby projects or can control a relay with external power if you need isolation or to drive a larger load.

There are lots of other IO modules, see google

Check DLP Designs. They have some interesting modules which use the FTDI chips, and FTDI offers Linux driver support. DLP has a little board with 4 relays, and also a USB to serial module with a bit bang mode that lets the module operate like a general purpose digital i/o board.

Note that I am clueless about Linux, but merely noticed that Linux support is claimed for these products.
