Regarding your last paragraph. My guess are pico color projectors with infinite focus - and cheap big electronic color video paper - with built-in paper-flat rechargeable battery - place it over an area with wireless energy and wireless link capabilities:

There are SEDs, smoke emitting diodes. Dark light emitting diodes, shadows must lit, I guess. And so on.
