LED flasher for a dog's collar.

Hi-

I need to build some sort of a flasher to put on my dog's collar- she's the same color as the carpet and keeps getting stepped on :-) I'm thinking a

3909 flasher running a LED from a coin cell. I haven't kept up to date on what's available, or if there are any better chips than the LM 3909 out there. Ideally it should be able to run for a year and be small enough to be clipped onto the dogs collar without having a honking big battery hanging off it (ideally the thing has to be smaller than the dog, which is pretty tiny). Any suggestions appreciated. TIA.

You need to get a bigger dog.

Paint the dog.

Put a helium baloon on it.

Does the dog sleep with you?

Maybe just a simple 555 astable?

I have been playing around flashing an LED. My application requires less than optimal flash length for viewing with the eye. Since I don't have a regular pulse generator setup, I'm wondering what the optimum-minimum duration for good viewing might be.

Or insert the flasher rectally?

A AAA Maglight would fit up the dog's arse just right.

Use a semi-permanent hair dye that is intended to glow under club black lights. Install black lights.

Is there some reason you do not want to just use a flashing LED?

Train the dog to stay out of the way.

We trained our cats by gently kicking them in the ribs when they got underfoot. This annoys cats, and they quickly learn to steer clear of people's feet.

Alternatively, you can buy such collars at PetCo, but plan on changing batteries about 50x more often than your spec.

Step on their paws a few times or, as I did, roll my desk chair over a paw... they learn really fast.

(I really felt bad about that one... I thought I had broken the pup's paw, but nope... just lots of yelping ;-)

Or we could go the other way: outfit the dog with a fence charger, thus quickly teaching people not to step on him...

Flashing LED dog collars have been designed and sold in large quantities. I happen to know the designer; the whole operation was bought by some fair-sized company. Presumedly, since the sales were very good and profitable, then they would still be on the market. Try Google first and do not re-invent the wheel if you do not have to.

You seem to have gotten lots of smartass unresponsive answers.

An LM3909 would work fine here, if you can find one. They've been obsolete for some time.

I don't know how long these run on a battery, but they're very small and very inexpensive. You'll probably have to renew the battery more often than once a year.
