Why do you insist on posting to an electronics design newsgroup when it's obvious you have nothing to do with, or say about, electronics design?

Oddly enough, I do occasionally have something to say about electronics design - a description that also fits you and Jim Thompson. We all also do seem to have our own political interests, which do get ventilated here from time to time.

I don't really understand why you and Jim let your politics dominate your thinking. I don't have any trouble recognising that both of you know what you are talking about on electronics, whereas Jim seems to think that anybody who doesn't share his - rather bizarre - political point of view is some kind of sub-human monster.

That how liberals think?

On politics, Jim, you are not only bird-brained but also malicious - both fowl and foul.

My persistent unemployment - nearly three years now - is probably best explained by my age (63) rather than any imperfections in my grasp of English. In fact I write much bettter English than most English-speaking engineers, and very much better English than most Dutch engineers. My written Dutch isn't great - when I finally got around to sitting the official "Dutch as a second language" (NT2) exams I didn't have any trouble with reading listening and speaking, but only scored 499 on the test of my written Dutch against a pass mark of 500 - but that doesn't seem to be any barrier to getting work as an electronic engineer in the Netherlands.

I don't have politics. I belong to no political parties, I don't vote, and I abstain from most forms of collective action. And I've spent my life training myself to think, and "you know what you are talking about on electronics" is just one aspect of knowing how to think.

I do consider myself to be liberal, with a small l, in that I'm not nationalistic and am willing to give up some of my privileges to help the less fortunate of the world, which I in fact do. I'm not a Liberal who blames others for the ills of the world, with gourmet goodies at hand [1] and ass comfortably planted in armchair.

I like Jim, and of course I disagree with him sometimes. You seem to revel in making yourself unlikable, and do a competent job of it.

What do you use for a marinade?

We like the local dungeness crabs with sourdough for dinner, maybe a salad. One crab will feed Mo and me, with enough pickings for crabcakes the next day. We like a red sauce, ketchup and lemon juice and horseradish and tabasco.

Get a few pounds of country style pork ribs. Boil them for maybe 30 minutes, then inspect and cut off anything that doesn't look good to eat.

The sauce is...

1 part soy sauce

tobasco and worstershire sauce to taste, a couple tbsp maybe, not too much worstershire.

It looks icky, so stir with an electric mixer; it will still look icky.

Submerge the boiled ribs in the sauce for 24 hours at room temperature, then barbeque, baste with a little more sauce maybe.

When you barbeque, all you have to worry about is the surface structure, since they're already cooked inside. That removes a lot of anxiety.

Not attitutde but opportunity. When I had a job, I too had interesting problems, which - when posted - generated interesting threads.

The stuff I'm fooling around with at the moment is all thinking and simulations - which are cheap, but don't generate interesting questions.

I didn't say I didn't mean it. There is a perfectly good argument to be made that the current U.S. policy of pre-emptive attack is simply state terrorism. It is supported by the U.S. Republican party, which makes them a terrorist organisation.

The counter-claim - that the pre-emptive attacks are all going to be directed at real threats to U.S. security, as certified by U.S. Intelligence - falls down on the example of Irak and the (absent) weapons of mass destruction. That attack was made for reasons of dogma, not intrinsicly different from the Al Q'aida attack on the Twin Towers

- though more people find Dubbya's irrational convictions more to their taste than Ben Laden's.

This argumement is too complex for the Jim Thompson's of this world, so posting it is a troll

As opposed to conservatives, who don't seem to think at all.

There is an equally good argument that you haven't said anything new, or interesting, or civil, in years.

Really, Jim, you should show more respest for Mr Sloman. He used to work at Cambridge Instruments, where he started any number of challenging projects.

And he has things to teach us. Why just lately, I learned from him that...

1. If Farnell doesn't stock it, "it isn't exactly a commodity part."

and

1. Americans are provincial.

If you want more of his wisdom, it's easy to find his posts. Just use the "search messages" function to look up keywords "Farnell", "Cambridge", "Republican" and "unemployed." That will get pretty much all of them.
